Honors Academics

Students looking to push themselves as scholars and grow as individuals will find exciting opportunities in the University Honors Program. To ensure that honors students are challenged in meaningful ways, they:

  • Meet honors and general education requirements by developing a personal learning portfolio in which they design an individualized plan of study

  • Incorporate both in-class and out-of-class experiences into their educational plan, so they can delve deeper into their learning

  • Take hands-on honors courses which incorporate innovative learning techniques and facilitate dynamic interaction between students and professors

  • Participate in group and individual advising sessions to help identify their personal goals and develop a plan of action that will move them toward those goals

  • Reflect on their experiences and to what degree they met their goals, then receive annual feedback and direction on their progress

  • Complete any of Miami's 100+ majors and possibly even count courses taken for their major toward their honors requirements

  • Join a community of like-minded peers who are serious about academics and also excited about taking advantage of all Miami has to offer

Our Philosophy

Our goal is to develop leaders and scholars who are well-prepared to tackle the intellectual, cultural and social challenges of the 21st century. Increasingly, students are being asked to possess high-level skills and abilities upon graduation that are not obtained in a traditional classroom setting. Our unique approach responds to the increased demands placed upon our graduates.

By the time our students graduate, we want them to be able to take ownership of their lives and responsibility for their continued growth and learning. This goes beyond checking off a list of requirements. We believe that the key to developing successful future leaders is challenging students to become actively involved in their education, make purposeful decisions, and chart their own educational journey.

National research indicates that leaders in the business, scholarly, and professional worlds have identified expertise in the following areas as crucial for success:

  • Knowledge of Science & Technology, Global Issues, Culture & Society, Math & Stats
  • Intercultural Knowledge
  • Integrity & Ethics
  • Communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Critical Thinking
  • Collaboration

Our focus is on ensuring that our students develop fully in all of these areas. Working with an honors adviser, honors students construct individual academic plans that steadily guide them toward mastery of these critical areas, leading them to reach advanced knowledge, skills and values in their chosen field.
