Internship/Service Experience:
My experiences in the Urban Leadership Internship Program profoundly influenced my decision to specialize in Psychiatry.  During the Internship, I worked at two incredible sites—the Artemis Center for Alternatives to Domestic Violence and the Emergency Department at Good Samaritan Hospital.  At Artemis, I handled crisis hotline calls, provided court advocacy services, and assisted survivors of domestic violence in obtaining social services.  At Good Samaritan, I shadowed an emergency medicine physician and had the unique opportunity to initiate crisis intervention with patients in the emergency room for domestic violence related injuries.  Listening to the stories of domestic violence survivors, I began to recognize post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance dependence.  This experience piqued my interest in Psychiatry as a field of medicine that would allow me to make a difference in the most personal aspects of patients' lives and to do socially conscious work with the most vulnerable among us.
