Internship/Service Experience:
In 1999 I worked in a Planned Parenthood clinic which provides reproductive health care and education for thousands of uninsured, indigent, and at-risk women, men, and children in Columbus, Ohio.  I also spent time working with disabled children as an Equine Assisted Therapy volunteer.  My ULIP experience taught me much about my hometown and about myself, and it inspired me to pursue a career that would allow me to combine my passion for scholarship and a commitment to community activism.  As a secondary school teacher in the large coastal city of Portsmouth, England, I embraced the exciting challenge of designing and directing a new service learning program for 16-18 year-olds. The guiding principles of Miami’s ULIP program inspired my efforts to create opportunities for my own students to undertake meaningful, reflective involvement in their urban community, and I can only hope their experiences will enrich their lives as much as ULIP enriched mine.
