Internship/Service Experience:
I worked in the state government in Columbus during the summer of 1996 through ULIP. The internship brought opportunities in speech-writing and project management. It was a great crash-course in workplace culture, office etiquette—all the important skills you never learn in a classroom. But more than anything, ULIP built confidence. It was a ticket to live outside my comfort zone. I set myself up in a big city with a new job, new coworkers, and new responsibilities. It was a thrill. And ULIP incorporated issues of social justice—poverty, gentrification—forces I had never understood firsthand. After that summer, my eyes newly opened, I spent a semester abroad, and I chose Mexico City over the beaches of Spain. I served in the Peace Corps after graduation, and have since worked for causes of peace and social justice. ULIP set me on a path for which I am very grateful.
