Internship/Service Experience:
My internship was at Read Mental Health Center in 2000. During my internship I worked with occupational therapists, vocational therapists, administrators, and direct care staff to provide case management and rehabilitation services to people with severe mental illness. I also planned a center-wide celebration in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The internship helped foster my interest in working with people with disabilities and the exposure I had to so many different career paths within the mental health/disability field helped guide my decision to pursue a career in case management. The residents of Read Mental Health Center taught me a great deal about compassion, respect, and, unfortunately, discrimination, and these lessons greatly helped in forming the professional (and personal) values I have today.
